What does close reading look like? Sometimes, it looks like a book overflowing with post-it notes!
As our Eighth Graders read The Book Thief, they’re learning to slow down and pay attention: annotating important passages, tracking themes and characters, asking questions, noticing patterns, and gathering evidence they can return to later.
It’s a practice that strengthens more than reading comprehension. Students are learning how to organize their thinking, support their ideas, and dig beneath the surface of a complex text.

Learning to paddle a canoe. Finding your way with a map and compass. Tackling a challenge when no one person has the answer.
Our Sixth Grade Wilderness Experience theme includes plenty of outdoor adventure, but we’re not necessarily trying to create expert paddlers or master outdoorspeople.
It goes deeper than that.
Paddling, orienteering, and team challenges ask students to navigate uncertainty, solve problems, communicate, take appropriate risks, and rely on one another.
The wilderness gives our students something increasingly valuable: real challenges with real outcomes. Along the way, they build confidence, independence, resilience, and trust in themselves and each other.
The outdoor skills matter. But who students become while learning them matters even more.
