About The College School
What makes The College School different from other schools in St. Louis?
At The College School, students engage in a rigorous academic program through hands-on, experiential learning. Rather than separating academics from real-world application, students actively explore, question, and apply what they are learning every day. With small class sizes, strong relationships, and access to our 28-acre LaBarque Campus, students are known, challenged, and inspired.
What ages or grades does The College School serve?
The College School serves students from Preschool (age 3) through Eighth Grade.
Where is The College School located?
Our main campus is located in Webster Groves, just outside of St. Louis. Students also regularly learn at our LaBarque Campus in Pacific, Missouri.
Academics & Curriculum
Is experiential learning rigorous?
Yes. At The College School, experiential learning and academic rigor go hand in hand. Students build strong foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics through programs like Illustrative Mathematics (IM) and Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA), while also applying those skills in meaningful, real-world contexts.
How do you teach reading and math?
We use research-based programs to ensure strong academic outcomes:
- Reading & Writing: Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA)
- Mathematics: Illustrative Mathematics (IM)
Students also apply these skills through projects, writing, and interdisciplinary learning experiences.
How do you measure student progress?
Teachers use a combination of assessments, observations, and student work to understand each child’s growth. Families receive regular updates through conferences, reports, and ongoing communication.
Will my child be prepared for high school?
Yes. TCS graduates are well-prepared for a wide range of high schools. They leave with strong academic skills, confidence, independence, and the ability to think critically and communicate effectively.
Student Experience
What is the LaBarque Campus?
LaBarque is our 28-acre outdoor learning campus in Pacific, Missouri. Students visit regularly for fieldwork, science investigations, and immersive learning experiences that connect directly to their classroom studies.
How much time do students spend outdoors?
Students spend time outdoors every day, with additional extended experiences at LaBarque, local neighborhoods and parks, and multi-day overnight experiences across the United States. Outdoor learning is an integral part of the curriculum, not an occasional activity.
What does a typical day look like?
Each day includes a balance of academic instruction, hands-on learning, collaboration, and outdoor time. Classrooms are active, engaging environments where students are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas, and work together.
How do you support social-emotional development?
We place a strong emphasis on relationships, self-awareness, and community. Teachers guide students in developing communication skills, resilience, and the ability to navigate challenges with confidence.
