The College School Launches Nationwide Search for Head of School

As of May 25, 2018, The College School’s Head of School, Ed Maggart, concluded his service to the school after his five-year tenure. Since 2013, Maggart has been instrumental in the continued evolution of the school. He poured countless hours into highlighting The College School in the broader world of experiential education, both locally through the founding of the Experiential Education Exchange (EEE), and nationally through the Association of Experiential Education (AEE). Perhaps the most visible legacy of Maggart’s time is construction of the award-winning Jan Phillips Learning Center that has changed the landscape not only of the school’s secondary campus in the LaBarque Creek watershed but also what we can offer students in place-based learning.

The board-level Head of School Search Committee has formally partnered with Educators’ Collaborative to support a nationwide search to find the school’s eleventh (11) Head of School since the school was founded in 1963. Educators’ Collaborative is a national search firm specializing in head of school searches for independent schools. More information around the search process and information for candidates can be found at: https://www.thecollegeschool.org/HOS.

While the search process for the permanent Head of School is underway, Mr. Carl Pelofsky, former Head of School at Greenhills School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, will serve as Interim Head of School for the 2018-2019 school year. Carl shared his thoughts about joining The College School family, “After touring the school, meeting with members of the search committee, and watching recorded speeches delivered by articulate, brilliant eighth graders at their graduation, I was immediately impressed by The College School and its dedication to program, growth, and most of all, students and their families. TCS is clearly a school that “walks the walk” with its concern for the innovative, compassionate education of the whole child. I’m eager to become a part of the community and help TCS during this time of transition.”

The Search Committee hopes to announce its new Head of School by the end of 2018, this individual will begin their term for the 2019-2020 school year.
