The St. Louis American newspaper recently featured an article on The College School’s partnership with YWCA Metro St. Louis and its Witnessing Whiteness program. The article discussed how the school hosts several volunteer groups of parents, families and the broader community, respectively, in space that encourages white individuals how to learn and speak about race and racism. It is a great opportunity for faculty and staff to learn how to empathize with people of color and have both brave and courageous conversations about race.
Since 2011, the YWCA has been sponsoring Witnessing Whiteness groups as part of its mission to eliminate racism. The work of Witnessing Whiteness groups draws on the book Witnessing Whiteness: The Need to Talk About Race and How to Do It by Shelly Tochluk. TCS held their first discussion group on August 29, 2017, and will end in mid-December. The series is comprised of 10 two-hour sessions.
