Fourth Grade

Every day, fourth graders at The College School challenge themselves to set goals, stretch their boundaries, and participate in an active learning environment. We begin the year building upon what is known and familiar.

In language arts, we read a variety of literature genres filled with strong characters and experiences to which we can easily relate. Through our literature group studies, we deepen our understanding of literary constructs such as plot, character, setting, and theme. Each student maintains a writing journal, as well as a nature journal, to record special experiences and observations.  Spelling lessons are conducted weekly and grammar is incorporated into writing assignments.

Math is time for students to build on the knowledge of previous years through pattern development, memorization, and utilization of basic math facts, and practical application.  Students take on concepts related to long division, 3 digit multiplication, fractions, and decimals.

As the year progresses, we continue to encourage students to develop their explorative nature. They may use a manipulative to uncover the concept behind long division or utilize technology to produce a creative, informative movie about water ecosystems. We stand beside our students as they experience the growing pains of new experiences, such as singing, acting and dancing in front of 250 people during the 4/5 play or spending two nights away from home on the fourth grade excursion to the Daniel Boone home, learning about the rich history Missouri has to offer.  Ultimately, what seems most daunting at the beginning of the year often becomes a most notable experience for the children by year's end.

Socially, fourth grade is often noted as a transition year for students. We support students in developing effective communication skills and addressing issues as a community. Regularly, students and teachers meet to discuss any hurdles that might be prohibiting the class from functioning as a healthy community. We have agreed upon protocols to use as we resolve conflicts peacefully and respectfully. Together, we brainstorm solutions and agree to try out ones that seem likely to be successful. We believe that this is an invaluable time in children's lives to be empowered to identify and assert their voice among the group. Whether their voice comes through in writing projects, group work, artistic expression or conflict resolution, fourth grade at The College School is a safe place for students to declare themselves as individuals, as well as members of a dynamic community.
