Greenhouse & Garden

Starting in the fall of 2007 we added a horticultural component to our curriculum.  It began with the construction of our greenhouse and garden.  In addition to growing vegetables for our students and teachers, we also promote the concept of growing native plants.  Growing native plant species allows us to attract and provide for native species of birds and butterflies.  Students not only learn about the importance of healthy food and where it comes from, but they develop an understanding of the natural connections between plants and animals and the importance of biodiversity. 

Students’ understanding of interconnectedness, horticulture, food, and growing systems are all key components of education for sustainability. David Orr writes that the “Sustainability Revolution” represents, “a rethinking of our relationship to the natural world as members and citizens of an ecological community and as trustees of all that is past with all that is yet to come.”   Education for sustainability inspires our students to think about the world, their relationship to it, and their ability to influence it in an entirely new way. Education for sustainability leads children to understand the interconnectedness of humans, the economy, and all of the Earth’s systems as well as the important role they play in creating a sustainable future. Education for sustainability prepares our students to be informed and responsible stewards of our future world.

Growing in our greenhouse, in our gardens, and on our many expeditions into the natural world, we welcome your partnership with us in creating a future where children, as citizens of the world, develop and contribute to our culture.
